Tiny Voices, Big Messages: What No at Mealtime Really Means

Please join us to explore this important topic with Marsha Dunn Kein, OTR/L, MEd, FAOTA.

For those of us feeding older infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, “no” is a frequent—and often frustrating—part of mealtime communication. But behind every “no” is a story. In this webinar, we’ll explore what that “no” really means from the child’s point of view, and how our response can either ease the tension or unintentionally add pressure. We will look at how the “no” reflects their growing autonomy, sensory experiences, and emotional regulation and explore the impact of pressure on mealtime dynamics, including appetite, food acceptance and long-term feeding relationships. We will think about when to worry and when not, what is typical, what might be concerning, and when to refer when the challenges go beyond the usual ups and downs. Together, we’ll unpack strategies to support responsive, low-pressure mealtimes that honor the child’s voice while nurturing a positive feeding relationship.

Participants of this webinar will be able to:

  • Define the mealtime “no” as mealtime communication rather than refusal.
  • List reasons a child might say “no” at the table
  • List tips for responding to the “no” of mealtimes
  • Describe the influence of pressure on mealtimes
  • Describe the importance of felt safety at mealtimes
  • Define when is it time for a feeding referral

This webinar is for all of those working in the perinatal period as well as children birth to 5 and their families.
