Key Considerations in Supporting Parents with Intellectual Disabilities and Specific Learning Disabilities
Please join us to explore this crucial topic with Dr. Trupti Rao, Director of Child Welfare Services and Psychology Training at the Westchester Institute for Human Development.
This webinar provided an overview of intellectual and learning disabilities in adults and its potential impact on parenting. There are many resources available for supporting children with cognitive and learning needs, but limited attention and support is given to parents who themselves have disabilities. In addition to providing an understanding of cognitive/learning disabilities and exploring key considerations when working with a caregiver with a disability, the workshop provided strategies on ways to adapt traditional parenting supports to meet the needs with intellectual or specific learning disabilities.
Participants of this webinar were able to:
- Understand and describe the criteria for Intellectual Disability and Specific Learning Disabilities
- Recognize and describe the potential impact of disability (both potential challenges and strengths) on parenting and a caregiver’s participation in home visitation/parenting programs
- Explore best practices for working with caregivers who present with intellectual or specific learning disabilities and gain actionable strategies on ways to adapt traditional interventions and parent training supports to better meet needs
This webinar is for all of those working in the perinatal period as well as children birth to 5 and their families.
