Intimate Partner Violence During the Perinatal Period: Meeting Our Families Where They Are
Join us to discuss this essential subject with Dr. Obianuju "Uju" Berry, MD, MPH, Director of NYC Health + Hospitals Domestic Violence Mental Health Initiatives & Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a key public health concern affecting the mortality, health, financial, and social stability of millions of families worldwide. Unfortunately, physical, sexual, and psychological violence disproportionately and asymmetrically affects women and girls in prevalence and severity that spans the life course stages from prenatal exposures through older age. IPV survivors often face highly medicalized models of care without sensitivity to gender- or trauma-related needs as it also clashes against concepts of intersectionality, social and political determinants of health, behavioral health concerns, and women’s health. Pregnancy and postpartum can be a risky time for IPV survivors and it is also a time for change. This talk identified definitions of IPV, prevalence, historical and political underpinnings of trauma, research, and behavioral health manifestations as well as introduce strategies for partnering with survivors on their journey to recovery.
Participants of this webinar were able to:
-
Identify different types of intimate partner violence and how it impacts survivors during pregnancy and postpartum and their families
-
Evaluate the historical context of policies and their role in shaping current inequities in perinatal mental health care and IPV
- Recognize the challenges and best practices of implementing initiatives for caregivers and young children impacted by IPV
This webinar was for all of those working in the perinatal period as well as children birth to 5 and their families.
This training offered 1.5 CE credits for the following license types: LCSWs, LMSWs, LMHCs, LMFTs, and LPs.
