Family Court 101: What Infant and Toddler Mental Health Providers Should Know
Please join us to explore this crucial topic with representatives from the Legal Aid Society Juvenile Rights Practice, the NYC Administration for Children Services, and the Center for Family Representation. This workshop provided an overview of the child protective New York State Family Court process from the perspectives of an attorney for the Administration for Children Services, a parent attorney, and an attorney and social worker representing the child. Where the child subject to neglect petitions is under five years old and receiving services, the Judge as well as the attorneys on the matter may want to obtain information from the child’s provider(s). This presentation discussed who has the capacity to consent to clinical services for the child, who the clinician can speak with, what is a subpoena for records and for testimony and whether services can be mandated. This workshop is appropriate for clinicians providing services for young children and their families.
Participants of this webinar were able to:
- Develop increased knowledge of the basics of New York State Family Court child protective proceedings
- Recognize and discuss the relationships between the attorney for the child, counsel for the City, parent’s attorneys and service providers
- Explain to infant and toddler mental health providers what they might expect when interacting with Family Court attorneys
